Mahler: Symphony No. 1; Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen

They really don’t play Mahler like this any more: the Bavarians’ grace and beauty as Kubelík eases them into the symphony’s first Wayfarer melody proves the point, with the flipside of storm and stress always firmly sculpted. This reissue keeps Kubelík at the top of the list. Few of the other 50-plus versions make the common-sense pairing with the Songs of a Wayfarer, heard here in what strikes me as the most movingly pointed of Fischer-Dieskau’s several recordings.
