Mahler: Symphony No. 6

This is Solti at his most brusque and unrelenting, responding to the symphony’s frequent mood swings with a casualness bordering on insensitivity. Characterisation of the musical ideas themselves is weak, orchestral playing rough-edged, and the hectic dashes through first movement and finale, far from tightening up the arguments, serve only to diffuse them. False economy, even on a single mid-price CD. Antony Bye
