With Kurt Masur’s new Teldec recording earning such accolades, it’s heartening to find the Sawallisch version reissued on Philips’s bargain series. It was supreme among German versions of its day. The Old Testament drama is powerfully sustained, Theo Adam’s operatic Elijah awesome and angst-ridden. In transfer the energetic arias scarcely sound thin at all. The Gewandhaus Orchestra is top-notch. Peter Schreier and Elly Ameling head a wonderful cast. Texts aren’t included, but they’re crystal clear anyway. Roderic Dunnett
