Mendelssohn/Brahms: Violin Concerto in E minor; Violin Concerto in D

Anne-Sophie Mutter was only a teenager when she made these recordings. The Mendelssohn shimmers with clarity, its undulating melodic charm captured with grace and refinement. The Brahms has much the same sweetness of tone, pleasant to listen to, but slightly less appropriate given the dramatic structure of this much more demanding piece. Karajan’s accompaniment, while never less than beautiful, veers towards stodginess. Christopher Lambton
