Messiaen: Harawi

Inspired by Peruvian folklore and subtitled ‘Chant d’amour et de mort’, the song cycle Harawi is the first work in Messiaen’s Tristan triptych. In its evocation of an irresistible, fatal love, it makes immense demands on both singer and pianist alike. Jane Manning is more than able to fulfil the requirement for a ‘dramatic soprano’, ranging from incantatory frenzy and violence to the utmost tenderness. David Miller is equally captivating throughout. A welcome return for a highly recommendable disc. Christopher Dingle
