Monteverdi: Duets and Solos

Drawing from Monteverdi’s Seventh Book of Madrigals (1619), his Selva morale e spirituale (1640) and various anthologies, this 1986 recording mixes sacred and secular, the liturgical and the amorous. Most of the pieces are brief duets, but the disc’s highlights are two long quasi-operatic solos: Se pur destina e vole, sung with customary purity of tone and unassuming grace by Emma Kirkby, and Lamento di Penelope, well suited to the darker timbre and more declamatory style of Evelyn Tubb.
