This substantial five-disc reissue includes the finest of Mozart’s 30 or so serenades, in modern digital recordings featured in the catalogues during the past decade. Under Harnoncourt’s exacting direction, the performances are consistently admirable; cultured and brilliant readings of the great Haffner Serenade and Gran Partita juxtapose with slighter offerings including the delectable Serenata notturna, and that most celebrated of all serenades, Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik. Peter Damm plays the solo part in a memorable account of the Posthorn, whilst Thomas Zehetmair is the erudite and dexterous solo violinist in the Haffner. With superb playing from Dresden Staatskapelle, this is arguably the highlight of a veritable embarrassment of riches! Michael Jameson
