Mozart: Symphony No. 31 (Paris); Symphony No. 36 (Linz); Symphony No. 38 (Prague)

Not the first artists to spring to mind for Mozart symphonies, but these performances on modern instruments compare favourably with versions by much more glamorous names. Tempi are brisk in authentic performance manner but the strings take the hairpins without strain and the results are fresh and exhilarating, with each work nicely in scale. The recordings are very acceptable and this generous combination of popular works is excellent value. One drawback: no booklet notes provided. David Michaels
