Allowing an unusually epic timescale of 19 minutes for the first movement of the Prague Symphony may raise a few eyebrows, but Harnoncourt’s Mozart, recorded at concerts, takes nothing for granted. Every musical strand in these great works seems to have been reassessed in the light of the conductor’s vast experience in early music. Add to this the outstanding playing of the COE, and you have performances that are both provocative and musically enlightening.
