Fire, heroism and fantasy characterise these remarkable performances from Malcolm Bilson, taken from his complete Mozart Concerto cycle, commenced in 1983 for Archiv Produktion. His reading of the E flat Concerto, K482 (Mozart’s Emperor?), has jubilant élan and visionary eloquence. It proclaims the virtues of authentic Mozart performance, ranking Bilson’s account among the very finest available. His solutions to the enduring controversy surrounding Mozart’s omission of substantial left-hand passagework in the Coronation Concerto, K537, may represent the most plausible so far committed to disc: Bilson elevates this work, the least highly regarded of the final seven concertos, to the status of a masterwork. Orchestral playing is vital and resplendently detailed, whilst recorded sound is magnificent. Indispensable. Michael Jameson
