WORKS: Works for violin and orchestra
PERFORMER: Salvatore Accardo (vln); Chamber Orchestra of Europe/Franco Tamponi
CATALOGUE NO: CZS 7 67567 2 DDD (1983)
Paganini’s main contributions to music were flamboyant virtuosity and the extension of violin technique. None of the music here has any real depth. The slower pieces are not without Romantic warmth, but the emphasis is on short-winded, showy variations. This repertoire could scarcely be better performed. Accardo comes as close as is humanly possible to playing every note in tune, and the orchestra gives unfailing support. There are no booklet notes.Wadham Sutton
