Palestrina: Missa Papae Marcelli; Four Motets

Palestrina’s most famous mass and a group of four motets are performed on this disc by a quintet of male voices. This makes for unusually intense and highly coloured performances, very unlike the ethereal choral sound usually associated with this music. The effect is enhanced by a surprisingly close recording which makes the consonants crystal clear. Highly recommended. Ivan Hewett
