Poulenc: Concerto for Two Pianos in D minor; Piano Concerto; Aubade

Poulenc’s three piano concertos are closer to Classical models in temperament than to the heroically confrontational ethic of their Romantic counterparts. However, the engineers on this recording seem to be under the misapprehension that audiences listen to these works from inside the piano. Many orchestral details, including an important flute and bassoon solo in the Piano Concerto, are inaudible. Duchable and Collard are stylish advocates for these charming works, but it would be fruitless to comment on the overall performances. Christopher Dingle
