Prokofiev: Violin Concerto No. 1 in D; Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor

This is enthralling music-making – Sitkovetsky and Davis unsurpassable in their inspired, if rather closely miked, unfolding of these melodious works, equally comfortable in the brittle understatement of parts of the First Concerto and in the ripe lyricism which pervades the Second. Nevertheless, 49 minutes seems decidedly ungenerous for a full-price CD, especially when the admirable Kyung-Wha Chung and Previn, at mid-price on Decca Ovation, offer the Stravinsky Concerto as well.
