Prokofiev/Debussy/Wagner

A popular orchestral programme under the baton of the much underrated Viennese-born conductor who died in 1993. His selection from the Prokofiev ballet is rewarding, sensitive to rhythmic shape and delicacy of texture. Precisely articulated though the Debussy is, it retains a languid, summery aura in a sensuous performance. Equally evocative is the conjuring up of the soundscape of Wagner’s alternately gloomy and sunlit forest. Sheffield’s new ‘20+R16 Ultra Matrix Processing’ is described in a technical note.

The recording – pristine, with the instruments finely spaced and registering with distinct characters – is mightily impressive. George Hall
