Ravel: Orchestral music

Ozawa’s made-in-Boston Ravel sounds, as you might expect, at least as American as it does French. There are many beautiful textures, not least in Daphnis, but there is also a muscularity which is particularly effective in La valse and Rapsodie espagnole. The orchestra is sensitive in Ma mère l’oye, Dionysiac in Boléro, and the recordings are clear and truthful. Stephen Maddock
