Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé; Valses nobles et sentimentales

Martinon (EMI) offers the same coupling, and in a competitive Daphnis field, Ozawa is hard pressed to beat either him or Munch’s 1950s reading with the same Boston SO (RCA) for sheer intoxication. Yet this performance has allure aswell as incisiveness, and it is recorded with equal attention to detail and massed effects; though obtrusive breathing (presumably the conductor’s) would irritate with repeated hearings. The notes commendably include atimed account of Fokine’s choreography. The Valses are stronger on energy than atmosphere. Keith Potter
