Ravel: Mélodies

The diversity of Ravel’s songs is well suggested in this compilation. Highlights include Gabriel Bacquier’s canny account of the Histoires naturelles, Mady Mesplé’s bright, gamine tones in the Five Greek Folk Songs, José van Dam’s distinguished interpretation of Don Quixote to Dulcinea and Teresa Berganza’s spicy voice and uninhibited manner in Shéhérazade. Documentation is good, though the sound has a touch of coarseness and not quite the expansiveness nor detail one would wish for. George Hall
