Ravel: Ma mère l'oye; La valse; Boléro; Pavane pour une infante défunte; Rhapsodie espagnole

No conductor had a more distinguished pedigree in performing Ravel than Pierre Monteux. Even just before his death in 1964, when these recordings were made, the first conductor of Daphnis was still in remarkable form. His performances are full of wit and poetic insight. The dance movements have an infectious flexibility, and Boléro, unfolded with superb poise, is a knockout. Best of all is Monteux’s control of rubato which, in Ma mère l’oye, creates a wonderful feeling of narrative.

Although these oldish recordings lack depth and ambience, the clarity and sense of ensemble which Monteux secures from the LSO is a treat. Jan Smaczny
