Ravel • Fauré

Anyone who is acquainted with Lorin Maazel’s recordings of Ravel’s operas will know that he has a natural affinity for the composer. His account of Daphnis et Chloé rivals the very best in a field where standards are exceptionally high. The (uncredited) choir sounds more accustomed to recording soundtracks for biblical epics and more time could be spent enjoying the sunrise at the start of Part 3. Nevertheless, with a generous and stylishly performed coupling from Ansermet and the Suisse Romande, this is an enticing bargain.
