Rimsky-Korsakov, Kalinnikov

Järvi does everything right in this Scheherazade and the orchestra plays to its utmost ability; there is excitement aplenty and it is sumptuously recorded in the best Chandos tradition. If there is anything missing it is a feeling of complete engagement with its programme; there’s a sense of a series of episodes emerging rather than of tales being spun. Edwin Paling’s violin solos, though, are warm-hearted and seductive. The fillers, culled from Chandos’s various Russian projects with Järvi, are apt and generous. Matthew Rye
