A Salieri/F Salieri

Recorded in 1985, this disc has a curious instrumentation – an 18th-century fortepiano (not a copy), deftly played by Badura-Skoda, together with a chamber orchestra of modern instruments. It works quite well, though nowadays it probably wouldn’t happen. The most interesting work is the Concerto for Flute and Oboe, which has been recorded before. The third work is a symphony attributed to Salieri’s elder brother, Francesco. All this music is rather thin and one suspects that the original disc owed its existence to the film Amadeus, where Antonio Salieri is portrayed as a clever murderer.

Perhaps. HC Robbins Landon
