Schubert: Die schöne Müllerin

There are many versions of Schubert’s most popular song cycle available, sung both by tenors and baritones. At bargain price, the Partridges’ recording from 1973 is very attractive, and certainly a lot better than the latest release by Uwe Heilmann and James Levine, reviewed in this magazine in January. Ian Partridge phrases immaculately and his tone is even and smooth – no lurches or rough patches. He also has a good sense of rhythm and attacks ‘Ungeduld’ with a real spring.

And he feels the changing moods keenly; he’s no less impressive in the angry vigour of ‘Der Jäger’ than in the sad resignation of ‘Die liebe Farbe’. Jennifer Partridge plays with a delicacy and precision to match her brother’s. Recommended. Adrian Jack
