Record company hyperbole usually needs careful sifting, but on this occasion, Decca is right in claiming ‘classic’ status for this issue. These are performances of lasting distinction. The recording of Schubert’s Trout Quintet was always a winner, and the 1962 performance of the Dvorák remains at the top of the league. The sense of ensemble is superb and Curzon’s phrasing always brings a smile to the face while effortlessly claiming careful attention from the listener. Though good, the remastered recording, with its rather restricted ambience, is not perfect. Even so, the performances make this a star recommendation. Jan Smaczny
