Schumann’s richly Romantic setting of Thomas Moore’s sentimental poem is second only to the later Scenes from Goethe’s Faust among his large-scale vocal works. The story may be naive and lacking in dramatic tension, but there is so much good music – especially in the achingly beautiful Third Part – that even a recording with rather ordinary soloists (like this one) is worth hearing. Gustav Kuhn proves an able and committed interpreter, and orchestra and chorus acquit themselves well. Sadly, RCA provides neither text nor translation. Stephen Maddock
