Schumann: Etudes symphoniques, Op. 13 & Etudes symphoniques en forme de variations, WoO 6; Carnaval; Toccata

Feltsman and Licad are both full-blooded, powerful players and neither suffers by their juxtaposition. Feltsman in the Études has all the flair of the Russian school: charismatic and compelling, and almost proving the case for live recording since something is present of the concert’s adrenalin and excitement. Licad’s Carnaval is well characterised and lively and she seems to revel in the virtuoso challenge of the Toccata.

One hate: Sony’s airline-style marketing on the booklet (‘If your lifestyle reflects your keen appreciation of the finer things in life, it deserves the accompaniment of the Sony Digital Club...’ – ugh!). Fortunately the performances can stand up to it. Jessica Duchen
