Schumann: Cello Concerto; Piano Concerto; Introduction and Allegro Appassionato, Op. 92

Du Pre's interpretation of the Cello Concerto is highly characteristic — expressive, spontaneous and played with total commitment. She presents the work as one long impassioned song, and die recording catches her warm vibrant tone admirably. The Piano Concerto is much less successful. Barenboim dominates, leading Fischer-Dieskau and the LPO into an interpretation marred by extremes of tempi which distort the music. David Michaels
