COMPOSERS: Sibelius
LABELS: Decca
WORKS: Symphony No. 3 in C; Symphony No. 6 in D minor
PERFORMER: Philharmonia Orchestra/Vladimir Ashkenazy
CATALOGUE NO: 436 478-2 DDD (1985)
These are amongst the finest performances in Ashkenazy’s Sibelius cycle. Both symphonies are projected in an exuberant manner, allowing little opportunity for reflection or inner subtlety. Surprisingly, this works particularly well in the emotionally elusive Sixth Symphony, though Rattle on a rival mid-price EMI disc brings a greater sense of forward momentum to the finale of the Third.
