Strauss: Orchestral songs; Metamorphosen

Even though Richard Stamp doesn’t quite achieve the same degree of emotional urgency that one experiences from the likes of Krauss or Karajan, his interpretation of Strauss’s Metamorphosen is certainly worth serious consideration for its sensitive pacing of the musical argument, the fine playing of the Academy of London and a warmly balanced recording. It’s also good to be reminded once again of Janowitz’s formidable credentials as a Strauss interpreter – the ‘Wiegenlied’ in particular receives a ravishing performance. What a pity, therefore, that no room could have been found for more songs.
