Offering a scintillating panorama of some of the finest dance sequences of the Romantic Age, Tchaikovsky’s three ballets were recorded by Previn and the LSO in the 70s. Twenty years ago, Previn could be a bit soft-centred: the kind of bouncing gloss he brings to the Act III coda of Sleeping Beauty seems to have more to do with Manhattan than St Petersburg. But don’t be put off: he’s a useful guide. With a virtuoso orchestra enjoying itself and (in Swan Lake) a violin soloist of the order of Ida Haendel, this re-vamped collection of favourite excerpts is guaranteed to give seasonal pleasure.
