Vaughan Williams/Parry

In these recordings from the Seventies, Tear’s voice is probably heard at its best, the admittedly wiry tone rising to an impressive power at times. As ever, he proves a skilled technician, with excellent diction (almost every word is clear), and there are some lovely mezza voce effects in ‘Youth and Love’. The Parry songs, selected from his long series of English Lyrics, are variable in quality, but never less than well made and the best of them fresh and imaginative. George Hall
