Vivaldi: Concertos Op. 4 (La stravaganza)

As the title La stravaganza suggests, Vivaldi’s Op. 4 violin concertos are full of inventive flourishes, none more so than the bizarre Concerto No. 8, which begins with what is almost a freeform violin solo! This recording by Claudio Scimone and Piero Toso is too melodramatic for my taste, with the slow movements leaning heavily towards Romanticism and the faster sounding overexcitable. The Huggett/Hogwood set on L’Oiseau-Lyre, which is much subtler in its use of dynamics and rhythmic shaping, is the version I’d recommend
