In his score for The Innocent Sleep, Mark Ayres aimed to write ‘widescreen music for a widescreen movie’. He’s done it, and the result is Puccini by the yard.

 

Lesley Garrett sings like an angel, the strings sigh doomily, but you can have too much of a good thing. Watching this thriller of forgotten London’s ‘down and outs’, I longed for a bit of silence.
