As one of the leading creative-traditional artists from Mauritania, singing in Arabic to her own plucked accompaniment, she has grafted on to her Moorish musical stock some neighbouring elements old and new, from Senegal to the Mediterranean, and some select and fully assimilated content ranging from a cappella to blues to funk.
The results are marvellously varied and constantly surprising. Through them runs the strength of a supple, intense and dynamic voice, as affecting in anthem-like lyricism as in spectacular ornamentation.
