Niafunke

Ali Farka Toure’s first recording since 1995 is also the first made at his home village in Mali. Sixty this year, he delivers probing, scudding solos on his ringing electric guitar and his voice sears over the cumulative rhythms.

The album’s tone is quite pensive and sombre. His was the generation that discovered black American music, yet aside from the instrumentation his music flaunts and celebrates its African substance.
