Quest

Sanjeev Chimmalgi is younger, and as recorded four years ago in QUEST not quite on the same level but potentially very individual. At first his voice resembles Rashid Khan’s light, grainy sound, but soon it becomes clear that Chimmalgi has an unusual vocal range and an ability to shade his tone and even deliver substantially different timbres to suit different ragas.

The main performance here is a subdued and difficult raga, impressively concentrated and full of feeling, gradually opening up over a slowish pulse and becoming more demonstrative but remaining quite introverted. The shorter sequels are freer and more outgoing, the second positively playful.
