Radiokijada – Nuevos Sonidos Afro Peruanos

Radiokijada is the brainchild of Christoph H Müller (of Gotan Project) and Afro-Peruvian expat Rodolfo Muñoz, both based in Paris.

Muller’s unobtrusive programming and treatments back Muñoz’s percussive work on quijada (donkey jaw rattle), cajita (a church donation box) and cajón (box-drum).

There are typical Afro-Peruvian rhythms such as waltz, the halting lando and the more fiery festejo. It’s a leaner update of Afro-Peruvian folklore than the similar recent ‘Novalima’ project and as such has the edge. Jon Lusk
