BBC New Generation Artist Louis Schwizgebel peforms Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor, Op. 27 No. 2 'Moonlight'; Schubert's Sonata No. 16 in A minor, D845 and Haydn's Sonata in C major, Hob XVI:50.

The three sonatas featured in this recital provide an ideal snapshot of the changing expressive potential of the fortepiano as it evolved from an instrument of the classical poise, closely related to the harpsichord durng the middle of the 18th century, to one with dramatic power and sonority. By the 1820s, the fortepiano could emulate the weight and textural variety of a full orchestra.
