Estonian composer Arvo Pärt turns 80 this Friday, and is being celebrated across Europe, reinforcing his position as the most-performed living composer. Here are three ways to listen to his music in September.
Last Night of the Proms - Saturday 12 September, from 7.15pm
If you've been lucky enough to get a ticket for Saturday, get there early to make the most of it. You can also tune in to Radio 3 from 7.15pm, or watch on BBC Two from 7.15pm and later BBC One. Pärt's Credo is being performed in the first half, before the traditional jollities of the evening take over.
Tivoli Vredenburg, Utrecht - Friday 18 September, 8.15pm
The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic and Choir perform Pärt's Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten paired with Mussorgsky's 'Coronation Scene' from Boris Gudonov and Rachmaninov's epic choral and orchestral work The Bells. Andrei Bondarenko takes the baritone role, the tenor filled by Sergei Skorokhodov.
Orchestre de Paris - Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September, various concerts
Paris dedicates a whole weekend to Arvo Pärt in the Grande Salle and surrounding concert venues. Paavo Järvi conducts the Orchestre de Paris and Choeur de l'Orchestra de Paris in the composer's Third Symphony, Tabula Rasa and Fratres among others.
Extra:
The Tallis Scholars this week released a video tribute to Arvo Pärt featuring his work Which Was The Son Of..., where fans were asked to send in a selfie featuring the album Tinntinabuli, which went straight to the top of the Classical specialist chart. It's a fun watch.
