At 72, composer, bandleader and trumpet virtuoso Kenny Wheeler is still at the height of his considerable instrumental powers. His disc with the young French trumpet-player Geoffroy Tamisier finds him on powerful form. Tamisier is also a talented composer and the group of musicians is excellent. Classical and jazz elements are cunningly mingled, there are freely improvised sections and in one of them Tamisier and Wheeler swap phrases and sound so stylistically similar that it is almost impossible to tell them apart. The disc is a fine tribute to a remarkable musician.
