There’s also energy in Ancerl’s Bartók – the Concerto for Orchestra was one of the mainstays of Supraphon’s LP catalogue – and it has worn well, exactly the right sort of piece to show off the character of the various sections of the orchestra. The ‘Game of Pairs’ may be slow by modern standards, but rarely has there been as much contrast of colour between the different wind instruments.
