Korngold was of course ‘verboten’ in Vienna during the Third Reich, but the State Opera maintained a healthy musical life with fabulous performances by the likes of Maria Jeritza and Helge Roswaenge – in Cavalleria rusticana – and Maria Müller – in Lohengrin – and it’s well worth braving the primitive sound on this Koch CD to hear excerpts from them.
