If I were to award laurels to the best of this year’s vocal reissues, they would almost certainly rest on Finlandia’s superb Kim Borg retrospective, all of which has been carefully transferred from Fifties-Sixties DG originals.
Borg’s singing of Sibelius has both depth and dignity, and no one since has given us a more compassionate or commanding account of Brahms’s Four Serious Songs. All we need now is for Supraphon to reissue Borg’s equally impressive Russian song recitals from the Sixties.
