Conductor Bernard Haitink • BBC Young Musician • Grazyna Bacewicz
In our May 2018 issue episode, we discuss the critic-composer Twitter spat, France's contract to help Saudi Arabia set up an opera house and orchestra, the death of El Sistema founder José Abreu, and a viola player's win in a court case against the Royal Opera House for hearing damage.
Plus, this month, we have a brand new set of jingles! They have been written for us by Christopher Maxim and recorded by Bristol's Exultate Singers.
We discuss our cover star, the legendary conductor Bernard Haitink, who was awarded Recording of the Year in the 2018 BBC Music Magazine Awards with his wonderful interpretation of Mahler's Third Symphony. We also introduce you to our exclusive cover CD, 'The Art of the Cello', featuring works for cello and piano by Mendelssohn, Britten, Bach and Debussy from David Finckel and Wu Han. Reviews editor Rebecca Franks talks to us about our Recording of the Month, Brahms Symphonies Nos 1-4 performed by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Robin Ticciati.
And of course, we all brought along a disc we've been enjoying this month, including recordings of Bacewicz's chamber music, concertos for bandoneon and accordion by Piazzolla and Galliano, the new disc from the Schumann Quartet and a new exploration of the Resurrection story.
This month's episode is presented by editor Oliver Condy, and features deputy editor Jeremy Pound, reviews editor Rebecca Franks and editorial assistant Freya Parr.
