In our August issue, we look back over the 125-year history of the Proms and the people who made the festival what it is today, from musicians and conductors to broadcasters and controllers. There’s also a selection of Proms recordings on your cover CD this month, including a performance of Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony.

Also this month, we celebrate the work of Chi-chi Nwanoku and her Chineke! Foundation, which have shone a light on the lack of diversity within the world of classical music and helped kickstart the careers of countless BME artists. In this month’s BBC Music Magazine Interview, Kate Molleson meets the world’s leading theremin player Carolina Eyck.

We name some of the best concertos written for unusual instruments, from harmonicas to bass drums and everything in between. Michael Beek meets the Oscar-winning film composer Alexandre Desplat, who is moving into the concert hall this year in a collaboration with the flautist Emmanuel Pahud.

Plus, we name the best recordings of Brahms’s A German Requiem and Czerny is our Composer of the Month.
