Petite Suite Maritime

In Petite Suite Maritime the French-Canadian Estria Wind Quintet offers a potted history of the Canadian wind quintet in the two decades or so after World War Two, beginning with Maurice Dela’s picturesque Petite Suite Maritime, continuing with workmanlike Suites by James Macdonald Gayfer and Walter Buczynski, and ending on a slightly higher plane with a Fantaisie by Jean Papineau-Couture. Unfortunately, the ensemble’s blend and tuning frequently fall below the threshold of acceptability. Anthony Burton
