Six young composers have been announced as the winners of the BBC Inspire Young Composers’ Competition.
Between the ages of 12 and 18, each have won a performance of their music at the BBC Proms performance, a broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and a commission from the BBC.
The winners of the 17-18 year-old category were Nathaniel Coxon with Two Cells, Anna Disley-Simpson with Underneath, and Harry Johnstone with Dis-Pulsed.
In the 12-16 category the winning entries were by Harry Castle, La Trahison des Images, Rob Durnin, Study in Anarchy and Matthew Jackson, Mirror Mirror.
All of the winning works will be performed by the Aurora Orchestra at the Royal College of Music on Wednesday 20 August and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on Monday 25 August.
The concert will also feature a new work by former Inspire winner Tom Harrold, commissioned by the Proms and BBC Radio 4’s PM programme.
Judge Judith Weir CBE commented on the ‘sophisticated concepts and thinking’ in works in the Senior category, adding that it gave her ‘great hope for the future of composing.’
There were also ten Highly Commended entrants. In the 17-18 year-old category these were Toby Hession, Matthew Kitteringham, Electra Perivolaris, Sophie Sparkes and Kieran Timbrell.
In the 12-16 year-old category Thomas Carling, Jacob Davies, Edward Percival, Tammas Slater and Thomas Sparkes were all highly commended.
The annual scheme is now in its sixteenth year and is open to composers aged between 12-18.
