What else is on at the Proms today?
BBC Proms also comes to the The Glasshouse, Gateshead for two concerts today. At 5.30pm, Sage Two hosts folk singer Angeline Morrison for a performance of songs from her 2022 album The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience. The album tells the untold stories of people from the African diaspora and their place in these islands, including ‘Unknown African Boy (d.1830)’, an enslaved child whose body was washed up on the Isles of Scilly.
Elsewhere, ‘Black John’ tells the story of Britain's first known Black horticulturist, while ‘The Beautiful Spotted Black Boy’ follows an enslaved child born with vitiligo, whose patchy complexion caused him to be paraded as a curiosity. Morrison performs tonight with The Sorrow Songs Band and special guests Eliza Carthy and Alex Neilson.

Later, in Sage One at 7.30pm, the Royal Northern Sinfonia orchestra, chorus, and soloists perform Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2. Nicknamed the ‘Hymn of Praise’, Mendelssohn’s Second is an expression of joy and faith, complete with dances, fanfares and hymns. The dark, sober beauty of Bach’s Keyboard Concerto in D minor will offer a stark contrast.
