Steve Pycroft has ‘reimagined’ two well-known pop hits for a special BBC Children in Need ‘Musical Battle’.

An all-female ensemble have recorded a version of Little Mix’s Wings arranged with Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, which will compete with the boys’ take on One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful set to the music of Verdi’s Anvil Chorus.

Singing the Little Mix track are sopranos Ruby Hughes, Elizabeth Watts and Charlotte Trepess and mezzo-sopranos Kitty Whately and Clara Mouriz, and they will be accompanied by an all-female orchestra conducted by Sian Edwards.

One Direction’s hit will be tackled by baritones Jonathan McGovern and Benjamin Appl, tenors Robin Tritschler and Nick Pritchard and countertenor Tim Mead. They will be backed by an all-male orchestra conducted by Clark Rundell.

Pycroft’s two arrangements, which follow his baroque version of Justin Bieber’s Beauty and a Beat broadcast for Comic Relief earlier this year, were recorded at Salford's Media City on 4 October and will be released at a later date.
