Jonathan Nott has been named as the next music director of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He will take up the post in September 2014.
Nott succeeds current music director Hubert Soudant and will hold the post for three years, conducting the orchestra for eight weeks each season.
The conductor made his debut with the orchestra last October with a programme of Debussy and Ravel – the following morning he was invited to become the orchestra’s music director.
‘I first conducted the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra in October 2011and it was immediately clear that there was an enormous rapport,’ said Nott. ‘What appealed to me most about making music with this orchestra was the freshness of the players’ approach, their commitment to the spontaneity of live performance, and their dedication and sense of good humour in achieving these goals.’
Nott’s next concert with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra will take place on 13 October 2012 when he will conduct Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs – with soloist Christine Brewer – and the same composer's An Alpine Symphony.
